River Cruise Itinerary

A festive journey destined to delight travelers of all ages. Switzerland, France and Germany provide the perfect backdrop for this true connoisseur’s Christmas market cruise. Discover the roots of our Christmas traditions as you explore some of Europe’s most charming towns. Browse for unique ornaments in Basel’s Christmas Market. Sip vin chaud as you stroll to Place Kléber to behold the enormous, brilliantly lighted tree that Strasbourg offers modern celebrants. See how the baroque town hall of Koblenz is transformed into an Advent calendar and find unexpected treasures in the red-roofed stalls clustered around Cologne’s magnificent cathedral. Savor tantalizing once-a-year treats with Uniworld’s “Taste of Christmas” program, including gingerbread, crepes with cinnamon and warm spiced wine. Revel in brightly painted carousels and handmade ornaments, medieval squares illuminated by twinkling lights, life-sized Nativity figures and joyful brass choirs. Sail through castle-strewn hillsides and visit charming towns decked in holiday finery for a holiday season you will never forget. Who will enjoy this cruise? Shoppers searching for unique gifts, and Christmas enthusiasts looking for the origins of many cherished holiday traditions. Anyone who loves seasonal treats and festive holiday decorations and lights.

Day 1 (Sat, Dec 12, 2020): Cologne (Embark)

Arrive at Cologne Bonn Airport. If your cruise package includes a group arrival transfer, or if you have purchased a private arrival transfer, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the ship.
Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2 (Sun, Dec 13, 2020): Cologne

Your local expert will show you favorite haunts around the Old Town and share some of the cathedral’s most intriguing and magical secrets with you.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 (Mon, Dec 14, 2020): Koblenz, Cruising the romantic Rhine River

This morning, you’ll reach the famous intersection of the Rhine and the Moselle. Here, where the two rivers meet, you’ll find the enchanting town of Koblenz. Watch the waters of the Moselle gush into the Rhine as you stand on the spit of land called German Corner before embarking on a walking tour of Koblenz’s historical treasures. Later, spend a spectacular afternoon onboard your luxurious boutique ship as you sail the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stretch of the Rhine is extraordinarily picturesque: Castles perch atop steep cliffs above the water and each quaint village is marked by the spire of its historic church.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 (Tue, Dec 15, 2020): Rüdesheim, Mainz

Your day begins in Rüdesheim, which, like many cities along the Rhine, dates back to Roman times, when the Rhine was the northern border of the empire. Today, Rüdesheim is famous for its beauty and its entertaining alley of shops and wine bars called the Drosselgasse. Then you’ll head back to the ship for a short cruise to Mainz. Mainz’s Old Town brims with specialty shops tucked into lovingly restored buildings. You’ll find jewelry, leather goods, books, toys—something special for every special person on your list. Or opt to explore neighboring Wiesbaden’s Christmas Market.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 (Wed, Dec 16, 2020): Germersheim (Heidelberg)

Wake up and choose your adventure for the day. Today you’ll have two choices: Venture into the storied city of Heidelberg, home to the oldest university in the country, or visit the Doktorenhof vinegar estate for a special vinegar tasting. The atmospheric cellar is like no other you’ll ever experience, and the candlelit tasting room is decked for the holidays. If you speak no German, here’s one phrase you might want to learn now: “Fröhliche Weihnachten,” or “Merry Christmas!”
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 (Thu, Dec 17, 2020): Kehl (Strasbourg)

Strasbourg is invariably described as quaint, a rather overused word that in this case is perfectly apropos. It’s also been known as the “Crossroads of Europe” for its strategic location halfway between Paris and Prague. With a friendly local expert, see this historic town with its cobbled lanes, half-timbered homes, giant stork nests and impossible-to-resist pastry shops that will win your heart. You won’t want to miss the holiday treats like bûche de Noël, the delicious Christmas cake made to look like a yule log.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 (Fri, Dec 18, 2020): Basel

Basel is a cultural and artistic powerhouse, with all sorts of galleries, theaters and museums. And at this time of year, the city’s Christmas Market draws visitors from all over Europe, as does its Christmas Street, lined with more than 100 beautifully decorated and illuminated Christmas trees. Do you have a special wish for Christmas? Write it in the Wish Book, which lies open in Basel’s 17th-century Town Hall during Advent, waiting for residents and visitors to express their hopes and dreams for the holiday—or for the world.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 (Sat, Dec 19, 2020): Basel (Disembark)

Disembark the ship. If your cruise package includes a group departure transfer, or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg for your flight home.
Meals Included: Breakfast

Hygiene and Safety Protocols for Uniworld

Uniworld approaches every cruise with that same thorough diligence. Stringent security and sanitation protocols onboard our ships are nothing new to us. They not only remain top priorities but are being escalated as we face the current challenge. As more information is provided from Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Uniworld will look to adopt their health and safety recommendations and continue to update for your added peace of mind.

SAFETY & SECURITY PROTOCOLS

  • All outside doors and access to the interior of the ships are locked when docked. Only registered guests can access the ship using a key card.
  • All guests and luggage are verified against the manifest at check-in.
  • Guests have 24/7 access to the front desk.
  • Key card scanners with facial recognition are utilized at the gangway.
  • Cameras are present at the entrance of the ship and in public areas, and are monitored by the reception staff.
  • Trained security staff are posted at the gangway 24 hours a day.
  • Ships are patrolled by trained staff 24/7.
  • All deliveries are thoroughly inspected before being brought onboard.

HEALTH & SANITATION PROTOCOLS

PLEASE NOTE: While Uniworld believes these protocols to be the appropriate steps in protecting the wellbeing of guests and crew, they will continue to evaluate and make changes if they are deemed to be ineffective or if they negatively impact the wellbeing of guests and crew. Uniworld is actively reviewing additional health and sanitation steps and will add them to these protocols upon approval.

GENERAL MEASURES:

  • All guests must complete a health screening prior to embarkation.
  • Gloves, face masks and small bottles of hand sanitizer will be readily available for each guest.
  • All guests and crew are required to sanitize their hands when entering public spaces, when coming back onboard the ship each day, and before each meal.
  • Housekeeping staff disinfect all public area touch points and hot spots throughout the day, including all handrails and door handles.
  • Fruits, cookies, chips, nuts, candies or other treats are now served to individual guests by the crew only. These treats are no longer available for self-service.
  • Disinfected wipes are available throughout the ship, including at coffee stations and in the public toilets.
  • Any onboard payments are processed using a contactless payment method and credit card machines will be wiped after each pin entry.
  • All coffee table books, magazines and brochures have been removed from public use. Guests will be able to access these reading materials via their complimentary PressReader app on their mobile devices.
  • Crew wash their hands frequently when handling guest luggage. Disembarkation luggage is kept separate from embarkation luggage to avoid cross-contamination.

ONBOARD DINING:

  • All meals are now served by culinary and waitstaff, with no self-service allowed during buffets.
  • All restaurant dining now has reserved seating, with guests at the same table, with the same people, each day.
  • To limit the total number of guests in a restaurant at a time, they have introduced two seating times for each meal.
  • Items that are usually shared, like bread and butter, are now served to each person individually.
  • All touch points, like chairs and salt and pepper shakers, are immediately disinfected after each seating.

STATEROOMS & SUITES:

  • All staterooms and suites are thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis.
  • All air-conditioning filters are cleaned and disinfected on each embarkation day before rooming takes place.
  • Umbrellas are now only available in rooms for individual use, with no shared umbrella stands in public areas.
  • In-room chocolate candy bowls are replaced at the end/beginning of each cruise.

EXCURSIONS:

  • All buses are cleaned and wiped with disinfectant before each use.
  • Face masks are also available on the buses, in addition to the staterooms.
  • Vox boxes are sanitized prior to embarkation and after each excursion.

CREW:

  • All crew receives professional health and hygiene training (HACCP) by an external consultant before each ship begins its sailing season, including training on how to look for symptoms.
  • All crew strictly adhere to social distancing requirements.
  • All crew undergo regular health screenings and are quarantined immediately if symptoms are present.
  • Hand sanitizer is readably available and mandated for use in all crew areas.
  • Crew quarters, public and private, are sanitized regularly.
  • All crew meals are served, with no self-service allowed.
